Review of That's Not What Happened

By Rebecca Milne

What an amazing read! I'm not usually one to be tempted by thrillers or murders mysteries but this book is a softer version. Mixing the genre of teen rom-com with the story of a school shooting, written cleverly as if the survivors of the shooting have placed their stories together to create an account of what happened on the 15th of March. This is written as is the reader of Keplinger's novel is the parents of McHale or the preacher who did not believe the true story in its first telling. So three years later, the collected works are ready, weaving in friendship, love, alcohol, abuse, and trauma, that come from witnessing such a tragedy. Evoking a response from the reader in agreement with the book's title, that's not what happened, is about the truth - even it it is not the story that people want to hear.
