Poem: Virus Bubble

By Rebecca Milne

This year’s a bubble,

Designed by a political couple.

If only it’d fly away,

Instead of leaving life so grey.

When it popped – it popped,

Then I think the whole world stopped.

Does anyone remember what was before?

Or did we all comply and shut the door?

The bubbles grown, three times now,

We’ll all get out of this somehow.

Pushing against an invisible dome,

Glad our house has become a home.

More scrubbing up than in wartime,

But closeness was our only crime.

Only one hug to make it go elsewhere,

Shame it’s in the water, and the air.

The bubbles spread – you can't escape,

Under control, then changes shape.

This is not a bubble from your bath,

We cannot begin to think of aftermath.

Shut your window and your eyes,

Soon we’ll all see brighter skies.

Outside in the sun where we belong,

Walking, talking, and hearing birdsong.

Being trapped has made us all so tense,

Big gardens with an even bigger fence.

Love your neighbours and those your hold dear.

When those around you, become the ones you fear.

No one is safe, and you can’t run,

Think what you will do when all this is done.

Far from over, a year has passed,

Hasn’t this year gone over so fast.

Learning to adapt and wear a mask,

Work from home, on an online task.

Rule of six, down to rule of one,

So much fun, then back down to none.

Start school, work and live on your own,

All getting sick of politicians happy tone

Come home for Christmas and celebrate,

Not knowing the bubble decides all of our fate.

Numbers of deaths rise everyday,

How can anybody feel okay?

It’s in the media and begins to dominate,

We want a way out, we want an end date.

Supermarkets stop you at the entrance door,

We are just wanting to get off of our bedroom floor.

To see the world again and interact,

But people are scared of each other, that’s a fact.

Scared of being ill, isolate, trapped in the sphere,

Waiting alone for two weeks, for an all clear.

It’s worse than any plague or apocalypse,

Hidden like the sun during an eclipse.

Just roll out the beloved vaccine,

Once immune, a future can be seen.

Keep each other company but stay away,

We can’t all wait to see the day,

When we are free to be with each other, however close,

Those will be the moments we treasure the most.

Over a year passed, living in fear,

For all those who suffered, we shed a COVID tear.
