Glamis Castle

Hello everybody!

For those of you who watch our YouTube channel we recently posted a video on the ghosts of Glamis Castle. In today's post we will be diving deeper into the ghosts that haunt this castle. Don't worry if you haven't watched the video, it will be the same content but with a few extra facts and even more ghosts (yay!).

Now for a little bit of background, Glamis Castle is one of the most famous castles in Scotland, it is known for being the childhood home of the Queen Mother, Elizabeth Bowes Lyon and also the setting for Shakespeare’s famous play Macbeth. The castle dates back to ancient times and has mainly been used as a residence since it was built, although it served as a military hospital during the first world war. The castle has quite the illustrious history which I recommend looking into.

Paranormal experts claim that there are nine ghosts that haunt Glamis Castle. One of the most infamous ghosts is Alexander Lindsay, 4th Earl of Crawford, more commonly known as Earl Beardie. He is said to have been a cruel man and a heavy drinker, the presence of his ghost is reported to be felt all over the castle. There have been reports of a dark figure standing over children’s beds as well as shouting and swearing. Legend has it that he remains in a secret room gambling with the devil after shouting for someone to play cards with him and as luck would have it 666 himself turned up.

There is also the ghost of Lady Janet Douglas, also known as the Grey Lady. Janet had an interesting life, she was accused of poisoning her first husband, Lord Glamis, when he died in 1528. She was let off the hook and free to marry her second husband Archibald Campbell of Skipness. But then she was accused of trying to poison King James V of Scotland. Her and her husband were imprisoned, her husband escaped but was killed shortly after. The king couldn’t find any evidence against her so decided to torture her family and then burn Janet at the stake for supposedly being a witch in 1537. She often appears in the chapel, and there reportedly a seat reserved for her in the chapel that no one is allowed to sit in.

One of the most reported ghosts is the lady with no tongue, she has been seen wandering the grounds injured and pointing at her face. No one really knows what happened but suffice to say it wasn’t great.
