Review of A Monster Calls

By Rebecca Milne

Similar to a childhood nightmare, and not as much of a horror book as it was first perceived. A boy is living with his cancerous mother, dealing with grief, anger and loneliness alongside an unexpected visitor of a yew tree that has come walking to tell him tales. Not to teach him anything that directly affects him but yet the stories linger into teaching there is no good and bad, independence and sometimes letting go is a great relief no matter how much pain it brings. As Connor knows that the real is not the figure that shows as 12:07 it is the truth in his nightmares of what is inevitable, the truth has to face. Not all monsters are evil, but yet the ending, I thought would have a reflection of his mother seeing the yew tree again.
